Biorhythm and ayurveda
We often hear about the human body being a microcosm – a miniature representation of the Universe. From the Chinese medicine with their daily clock that specifically guide nutrition, physical exercise and emotional cleansing to the Ayurvedic guide about rituals, daily/seasonal routines for cleansing, rejuvenate or sustain, and doshic seasons, they all aim at keeping our biological systems in harmony with Nature. Our biorhythms are the links to live on earth.
My PhD was about controlling fish reproduction with temperature and photoperiod verifying hormonal changes, ovarian development, plasmatic components and timing of spawning. A 2 year experimental follow-up showed the effects of environmental conditions on biorhythms.
All our biological systems, directly or indirectly, follow circadian, seasonal and doshic rhythms. They are clocks working at different activities at different time and submitted to Nature to reset, shutdown or maintain their activities. Production of enzymes, hormones, vitamins, neurotransmitters are linked to those rhythms. We are entering the pitta season, the season of fire, the energy to get things done, to plan adventures and to live fully. Pitta governs transformation, digestion, focus and clarity fueling creativity and purposeful actions. Without care, it can lead to intensity, irritation, inflammation, overwhelmed, over-reaction, or even burnout. Care starts with awareness, courage to act follows.
Balancing actions to keep in mind natural biorhythm and time of the day:
Morning sun: to help you start the day with energy, time for cleaning the wastes accumulated during the night
Midday: when the sun is at its peak: best to digest a good meal as your digestive fire should be at peak, followed by a short nap protected from the sun to ease the digestion.
Evening sun: time to let go of the day’s work, to relax, to let the body evacuates accumulated toxic mental stresses of the day
Night: period of darkness for a calm sleep necessary to let go tension, stress and toxins
In Summer, Nature encourages us to cultivate balance through cooling foods, nourishing routines, meaningful communication and periods of stillness such as:
Morning sun: step outside in the early morning to drink a cup of tea and sit quietly connecting to your surrounding with gratitude
Midday: take time to sit down to eat a cooling, sweet and nourishing meal. Coconut, nourishing salad, cucumber, rose water, hibiscus tea…
Evening sun: keep work, at work, and enjoy a joyful meal with family/friends
Night: enjoying the sunset, keeping away from electronics, and to cool down the site of pitta, the eyes, place 2 cotton rounds soaked in food-grade rose water over closed eyes. Lie down for 5 minutes. Let your breath slow down. Let your eyes release.
Finally one thing about biorhythm is regularity. The body does its activities at regular interval so an irregular lifestyle is a tremendous stress on biological systems. Stress is a major component of disease. Summer, with pitta energy, is a good time to make adjustments. Less stress, more time to relax, to meditate and to make the small changes that bring better health and joy. A small change, it is all it takes to feel better. Wishing you well!
